Central Bank of The Bahamas:Open Call

This painting was inspired by the disheartening yet gloomy parts of covid and how it had affected our people. This painting was inspired by a dark yet gloomy season my husband and I both faced as covid had taken away EVERYTHING what we knew best. In such an awakening moment, it strengthened who we were to the core, and taught us alot on how we should appreciate life. There happened to be more persons just like us who might’ve died due to depression because of not talking about it. There were also persons who did not have family members, a religious community and family supporters to pull them out of what would be described as near to the “Great Depression” of the 30’s. As the ugly head of covid has been tamed, recently the exposure of what damage it mightve caused to our family structures, our health both mentally, spiritually, physically and emotionally has been depicted in this painting. We both have bounced back, or been restored since covid, in everyway and everyday. But I can say that it is “REAL REAL OUT HERE”.

“It’s REAL REAL out here”, 2020
Acrylic, canvas
11” x 8.5
“ Restrictions, temptations, trapped in the four walls, asking for survival, what is survival when I dream about the open ocean…wait we’re only allowed to catch what they give me to eat. It’s not even a catch, when I have my family to feed. Salty oceans have formed over my head, and they cloud my vision, because it’s all I dream about. “It’s real real out here.” This painting was painted in the middle of the pandemic, around June of 2020 and finished around September 2020. Imagery was used to describe the deterioration of the family/gender structure, & socio economic struggles during a famine/pandemic. The painter focused on the emotional influence of the character being portrayed; as a typical male in the lower middle class and his survival during the collapse of his world and his social class. His job was to save, protect and provide for his family. Now facing starvation due to unemployment, abandonment and the restrictions that came along with covid, this young male now faces the judgement of his social community of not being prepared for something that affected everyone. The yellow background was used to describe a safe, yet protective initiative that in return affected a lot of persons negatively.
